Great
first outing of the year with a decent turnout. The
day was sunny yet a bit windy and mild. The course
was in good shape. We played a team event with past
NYLGC champion
Paul
Gomez
and a frequent guest
Anthony Sirica
winning the team competition by a stroke over two
crafty NYLGC veterans
Stu Wurtzel
and
Ray D'Agostino.
Due to course conditions and no fault of the groups
playing ability, there was not a closest to the pin
winner. Men's long drive was captured by
Paul
and
Andrea
Williams
won the ladies long drive.
Players
socialized after the round in the beautiful club
house.. A glass was raised and we all had a chance
to get to know each other better. I hope this
becomes a common practice among the group. It was a
great start to the golf season. Looking forward to
seeing all of you at the next event at the awesome
Patriot Hills Golf Course in Rockland County.
Patriot Hills Golf
Club, Saturday, May 19.
It was cold and rainy...and if this bad weather
keeps up on the day of our Tournaments, there may be
a revolt!
Well,
what can be said? Although it was wet and cold,
this course is an absolutely joy to play. The
course was in beautiful shape and our players
enjoyed it so much, that some of them requested we
play it again this year! While that cannot happen
this year, maybe in future years, we will do a
bi-annual trip to this course. Nearly every hole
has dramatic elevation changes and offers our
players visual enjoyment (even as the course
swallows up dozens of golf balls -- most of them
mine!).
This week
we played a handicap-adjusted, two-person best-ball
event. With 24 golfers, we had a full group of
players, all of them eager to challenge the course.
Of course, with the rain throughout the first 9
holes, it made things a bit harder, what with
slippery golf grips and unsteady traction on the
ground. On top of this, I was playing with a
completely new set of clubs; new irons, woods and a
putter (which I had never even swung before except
immediately prior to the round at the driving range)
- so I was hoping for the best. It was good at
times, and not so good at times (although it got
better when I started playing with some rain
gloves). Add to that fact that I (think I) hit a
ball onto the roof of the Clubhouse on the 18th
hole, before it rained down on Lynn Haynes (who
luckily was in her cart at the time), it was quite a
first round for me and my new clubs. Well, my
partner and I did not win, but we enjoyed
ourselves.
No, the
two ladies from the first group, sisters
Andrea
and
Mary
Connell,
came in with the best score of the day, with a team
net score of 63! You go Girls! Too bad Mary had to
leave before spending her Tournament prize money.
They narrowly edged out
Ric
Vigorita
and
Ken
Bunting
by one
stroke.
Ken
got some small measure of revenge when he absolutely
crushed his drive on the Men's long drive hole,
winning that contest.
Andrea
Williams
also stepped up to the plate on the fifth hole,
winning her second long-drive contest of the year.
Yes, she is now 2 for 2 and she has thrown her
gauntlet down Ladies! Finally, at the short(ish)
17th hole, we all competed together for our
closest-to-the-pin contest.
Marty
Arnold
was able to put his shot within 8 feet of the pin to
claim the prize. Hope you made the birdie, Marty!
After the
round, we all retreated to warmer temperatures in
the clubhouse. Our players shared a drink and some
food while waiting for others to finish. Pictures
from the event can be found
HERE.
